What was wrong, and what we did.
The 35-year-old landscape sat on a suspended slab above underground parking, and it had reached the end of its life. We removed it and built a new infinity-edge fountain from the top of the first parking level. The structure, drains and waterproofing were engineered for the slab below.
Mechanical equipment runs across two parking levels, and the granite coping was set to the millimetre so water spills evenly over the edge. Two low-wattage lights on the centre geyser light the fountain at night.
The work
Building on a suspended slab.
01
Remove the old landscape
The 35-year-old suspended-slab landscape came out down to the top of the first parking level.
02
Protect the structure
Drains were scanned so no rebar was cut, and lasers set the drain elevations.
03
Pour in one day
Eight trucks of engineered concrete formed the 2,400 sq ft fountain floor in a single day.
04
Lighten and seal
Structural insulation reduced the load on the slab, and engineered waterproofing sealed it.
05
Run the mechanical
Pumps and piping were installed across two parking levels below the fountain.
06
Set the edge
Granite coping was set to the millimetre, and two low-wattage lights went on the centre geyser.
